Angela Martin: Hi, I’m Angela Martin, and welcome to 13a Fairyland Road in Kuranda. This is quite simply an absolutely magical, magical property. It’s set on about 3.5 magnificent acres of organic fruit orchards. The house has been loved once as a big family home, five bedrooms and two bathrooms, and also as a retreat, which we will come back to and talk about a little bit later. You might have actually seen the original Fairyland House, which has been in this area for a very, very, very long time.
Now, I want you to google Fairyland because this whole area has historic significance, that’s a very big word, historic significance to Kuranda. There was actually, in the 1930s, a tea room in this whole area, so do please google Fairyland. Back to the magical Fairyland House. We are at the end of a north-through road. A beautiful, breezy, windy day today. It’s private, it’s peaceful, and a little bit windy. We’re back onto Barron River. You are going to seriously fall in love with this property. How was that for a fabulous walk through flat, usable land? I just gave you a little sneak peek of some jackfruit hanging from the trees. There’s just, like I said, hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of fruit trees, gardens, nurseries, water, bamboo. Just fabulousness. We are going to head into just for a little bit of orientation. This is the main house. Five bedrooms, two bathrooms, heaps of character. Over here, we actually have an area that is used as a yoga studio, meditation living area, and massage or therapy area, whatever you want to use it for. Let’s go in and have a look.

One of the first things that you will notice about this fabulous building, house or retreat or accommodation, whatever you want to use it for, is that it is absolutely character-filled. This has got energy, it’s got organics, it has got relaxation. It just feels brilliant. Where are you going to find this? That is an original wall from the original building. We have got great big wooden beams, exposed wooden beams, tiled floors, fine. We got tile floors, but look at this, the history of those leadlights. They are original leadlight pillars and they are majestical.
I think that’s the word. I’ve probably invented it because I do love that word, but look at this. That is just absolutely gorgeous. Colors, real leadlight. You don’t see things like that anymore in the modern world, so this really is special. A little bit of orientation, we have the main entrance that we’ve come in. We have just a great big living area, relaxation spot. We’ve got our two bedrooms. Beautiful natural light coming out from the garden. Again, look at those windows. We’ve got a barn door over there for a little patio. Kitchen in the middle.
Then down the other side, we have got our other three bedrooms and our two bathrooms. Big patio across the front. These doors are actually two. We won’t open them because there’s a chair in front. How brilliant is that? Absolutely fabulous. We head down here, and look, a piano. We have, again, original, comfortable, almost like an English cottage, something you would expect to find in the olde-worlde environments of yesteryear. Again, we’ve got the brick, we’ve got lintels that probably would have been maybe a door at one point because we’ve got the header there for the door.
Fabulous original tiles, I love these. Are these ’70s tiles? ’80s tiles? I don’t know, but they just work magic. Windows. Where on earth are you going to find windows like that? That is inspired. Absolutely beautiful. Just beautiful. Just gives it a whole different feel. Now, when you come in here, we’ve got hanging chandeliers, we’ve got big high ceilings. Again, if you look at pictures of York in the UK, for example, all the Viking and all the old styles, this is exactly what it’s like. It’s rustic, it’s organic, and it has a heart, absolutely has a heart.
Two other bedrooms through here, so we’re just going to duck a little head. In we come. Oops, here we go. We have a beautiful, light, airy bedroom. Now, we did talk about the fact that it had been or is run as a retreat, so you can use these rooms as regular bedrooms or guest accommodation. They’re all fully tiled. Again, we have solid rendered walls, so it’s going to be cool, it’s going to be insulated. You have these fabulous– every room has got fabulous views out into the garden.
Then if we come through this way– again, come up this way and come in here. Here we go. We have another really lovely room. The strapping on the ceilings, fabulous old-style. It’s just got character. Heaps and heaps of character. If we look at the bricks again, love this, just love it. Wood and little bits of the original brick that haven’t been rendered. Beautiful views out to the garden. Absolutely stunning. Breathe in the relaxation, breathe in the organics, and I’m going to meet you around at the entrance and we’re going to have a look at the other side of the house.

I just realized as well we are heading to the kitchen, but the VJ on the other side that’s a tongue and grove wood is silky oak, rare as hen’s teeth. Can’t buy it even if you wanted to. If you did, it would be a squillion dollars a cubic meter. That is on the other side under there. Absolutely gorgeous. Before we go to the kitchen, barn doors. This is brilliant. Just look at the natural light and the sun. Probably we’re going to go from light to dark because it’s a bright sparkly day today.
Onto the patio. Look at this patio. We can see those magic windows that we looked at from the inside here and also over here as well. This is just a beautiful sun-filled spot. More fruit trees. We’ve got hundreds, and I mean, hundreds of fruit trees, and we’ll have a look at that when we go back into the garden. Now, we are actually going to head to the kitchen.

We just came from the two big living areas. This here was just a little screen so that you cannot have that there if you wanted a nice, big, open entrance into your kitchen. We’ve got a brilliant, little wooden bench. Cooktop, again, I love these original organic tiles. It just adds so much. It’s not marble, it’s not gold-plated, but it feels real, and that is really rare. Plenty of space. Butler’s pantry in here. A little person there saying hello as we go in. Watch your step. This is the equivalent of a butler’s pantry. It is big, it’s tall. We’ve got natural-light window opens and you could put anything in here you wanted.
Plenty of shelves, your microwave, any of your bits and bobs, and you would have plenty and plenty of space. Out here is really just for your food prep and washing up your dishes. What’s really, really, really brilliant is that we have a little patio area. It goes across the back here. How good is this? Skylight. We’re not going to get any rain on us. This is actually another bedroom in here, which we get to when we come around the other side, but we can poke a little head in. The laundry, totally functional, totally usable.
Again, we’ve got a clear perspex so that we don’t get rained on. Absolutely brilliant. This is actually a big room. You could use it for storage as well. Not that you need it. There’s storage places everywhere. This is just sunny, open, and bright. Just magic. We’re going to head back around– Pop your head in there and then I’m going to meet you at the other end.

So much natural light, and I just can’t help but keep feeling all the years of history. That’s just brilliant. We’re going to head to the other side of the house now, otherwise, I’ll be chatting forever. Remember, a big large family home or guest accommodation. Your little brain can think about whichever way works for you in your life as we go through it. This has been done up as two single beds. [sighs] I just love the wood, love the wood. This, again, is just a really comfortable, fully tiled– it’s just got an energy.
I know what you’re saying. “Angela, it’s just a bedroom.” Well, yes, it is, but you’ve got those fabulous little windows. Again, the crisscross windows, garden views everywhere we go. This room is the one that we popped a little head in from the patio. This patio, this joins us back into the kitchen. What I was even thinking was, if you don’t need your five bedrooms, just a thought, and we can talk about it when we see each other, this wall here, you can pull this wall out and make your kitchen huge. That could be a servery or something.
This then still becomes a little sunny patio area. That wall, that could come out. Absolutely, really simple and really easy. The main bathroom, tiled. We’ve got a bath. Oh, love them. Again, that’s probably Chillagoe marble, if I’m not mistaken. Can’t find it. Can’t buy it anywhere. It’s gone. All these things that are in this house are actually irreplaceable; shower, views out to the garden. Nice big high ceilings. That’s the thing. We’ve got this real sense of space and airiness. Disability toilet, as in, it’s a sliding door, anyone’s toilet, but easy access if you have a chair or a walker or something. Not that if it’s a family home, you need to think about these things.
Then we have, oh [tah dah!]. Hang on. These are brilliant doors. Silky oak. They lock, they close, double doors, into just another lovely room. The rooms are spacious. They’re not little square boxes. This is an L-shaped room. We have sliding doors and views out to the garden. Again, we’ve got the strips on the ceiling, which just make it feel old and rustic. That’s because it is an older home and it is absolutely rustic, and that is the charm.
Then we have another bathroom. This was an original leadlight door from a very long time ago. Been repurposed, and I think it is just perfect in every way. This is a super clean room. We’ve got a vanity, we’ve got a toilet. Again, a view out to the garden. A bed, two bath, can be reconfigured whichever way you would love. We are now going to head back up, I’m going to meet you on that front balcony, and we’re going to have a look at the studio.

Absolutely brilliant. Fairyland House is a raw vegan life sanctuary. This whole area over here– well, the house, of course, can be accommodation, but this is the most amazing yoga space. You come in here, there’s plenty of– Go back a couple of steps. Three and a half acres is all flat and usable. You can get as many cars, as many tents, as many caravans as you could squeeze into a three-and-a-half-acre property. That being said, this is where all the action happens.
If it’s residential and you want to live here, this could just be for your group activities, for your hobbies. It could be a man shed, it could be whatever you want it to be. This is a brilliant indoor outdoor. There’s almost instant calm, instant calm. The environment here with the rainforest, it lends itself to just relaxing your brain, everything else that you would want out of life because you have these amazing garden views. I mean stunning, stunning garden views. You don’t feel like you’re hemmed in in any shape or form, and this is a really, really, really, really, really big room.
We have the Barron River, which is down over there. There’s a track that goes all the way down, a five-minute walk, but it backs onto our property here. This, just bear with me– 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, so roughly 6– You’re going to really have to bear with me on this one. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, or 14 in that direction. This is brilliant. How big a space do you need to do whatever it is you would like to do? We’re going to head back around that way. That door takes us to the toilet, but we’ll come this way so that you can get a feel for us going back at it in this direction.
Look at that. Who would not want to just sit and relax looking out there? Hallway here. This was the door that we came into, or we can access from a little yoga space, recreation space. Storage room. It’s quite a big space in there. You can use it for whatever you would want to do. This is a big bathroom, disability bathroom, wheelchair if you want to, and again, just plenty of space, but it can be used as a family bathroom if that’s what you want it to be.
Brilliant room in here was used as a massage therapy room. Just a room. You know what it’s like with rooms, you can use them for whatever you want. We’ll just head back this way. This whole building would be perfect for, as I said just before, it could be any sort of group activity. It could just be that you want people around or you want to run a pottery studio, or you’ve got family and friends that you want to stay and you can just repurpose the area, but all the hard work’s been done if you did want to have some people come and stay or if you did actually want to do some classes. Absolutely brilliant.
Little tea room here. I can just imagine sitting, relaxing, having a cup of tea. This is basic but very functional. It would’ve started off life as a shed in the original house but we are on bore water, we’re on mains power, but we’ve got all the access to the bits and pieces that you would need just to have a communal or intimate little tea room. Now, we are going to just take five minutes and we’re going to have a look through some of those amazing gardens.

Wow, I think it’s a Cadaghi, which is a tree that’s native to this area. When it rains, the bark on the trees, they go like a sparkly, turquoise-red-blue. It is the most amazing– it’s just a magical, magical tree. Wow, and of course, that’s part of the original forest in Fairyland. Before we go ahead into the gardens, and I’ll show you some veggie areas and stuff, just for a point of reference, the outside of here was where our yoga studio– Oh, look at the size of that plant. Oh my goodness. Wow, that’s amazing.
We’ve got a building here. You’re going to see us in the little sun. Trees everywhere. The Barron River, if we actually head– let’s head around there down a little bit. I may go this way so, again, you can see the building. Let’s have a look at the building. That’s a yoga spot in here and the Barron River, we’ve got our land, a beautiful rainforest over here. Now, we have about an acre or so of the rainforest that is protected rightly so because that’s where we’re going to get all the birds and the butterflies. It’s just a rainforest and it is beautiful.
We have our land and then it goes on to railway land and then you can actually walk down to the Barron. I’ll just show you where the track is and then when we’re actually here, we can walk down together, just down through here. Nice, easy walk straight down, cross a little bridge and we can walk the dog or you can put your feet in the water, whatever you want to do, but it really is just magical. Just conscious that we’re already on a long video so you probably don’t want to do a walk down the Barron. We’ll see it when we get together. We’re going to have a bit of a quick wander around, look at those veggies, and do a quick wrap-up.

Beautiful, beautiful trees. Just a little bit of orientation so you get a sense. Three and a half acres is a lot of land. That’s the main house. That was the studio. We came around the studio and that’s where we walked down to the Barron River, and the back of the house, that’s the master in here. We came down the hallway, that’s the little patio area at the back of the kitchen and one of the bedrooms. Then that was the two bedrooms that are off the living spot.
Now, there’s all these little bits. We’re on bore water, as I said before, we’re on mains power. This is just a little shed where we’re going to keep the lawnmower, some pots, and plants. That’s not the main veggie growing area if you like. We’re going to walk back around that way and we’re going to have a look at that just before we do our wrap-up. Amazing energizing block. That was the other bedroom at the end of the second living area.
Hundreds of fruit trees. I did talk about hundreds of fruit trees. We’ve got so many different kinds, I’m not even going to– I’m going to mention them. Avocado, pawpaw, jackfruit, durian, and 10 million different kinds of bananas. Just look at this. Just look at this. Just come with me. Come with me. That’s the other part of the– I’ve got to show you this. That little veranda, beautiful, little cross windows. Where have you seen anything that size? Where have you seen it in your own garden?
Let’s not beat about the bush, organic fruit orchard is worth it. It’s white and gold. Hundreds of beautifully nurtured, mature trees. Now, spots and space, gorgeous fertile land. You can grow your herbs, you can grow whatever you want in there. You can take it down, you can put it somewhere else, but all these structures are there just to feed the soul, and of course, give you all that lovely, yummy food. Wow, look at that. It’s amazing. Flat land, plenty of space, beautiful trees. What is not to love?

I’m actually whispering because this just feels so calm and just so relaxed, and hopefully, as we’ve walked around, you really do get a sense of the energy, the inspiration, the just being at one that this property actually has to offer. As I mentioned at the beginning, a large family home, five bedrooms and two bathrooms, or as a retreat or as Airbnb or short-stay accommodation, groups getting together, or just your own little paradise.
The organics in this property are irreplaceable, absolutely fabulous, and of course, the location, oh my goodness, Fairyland. Remember, google Fairyland, not this property. Well, you can, of course, but Fairyland is an area for all the history that’s associated with the old Kuranda, end of a no-through road. You can’t hear anything, you can’t see anyone. Yet, if you’ve got children, we’re just a five-minute bicycle ride to the Kuranda State School and the swimming pool and the Barron River, right on your back doorstep, five minutes into Kuranda Village, and then another 15 minutes down into Smithfield, which has got your Bunnings and your Woolies and your Coles and everything. That, you think you’re in another world, and then you go down there and you’re into modern suburbia.
This is an unbelievably special, special property. Please don’t forget the hundreds of organic fruit trees, all the ability to grow your own food.
