Angela Martin: Hi, I’m Angela Martin, and welcome to Number 5 Sandalwood Close in Kuranda. Super excited to show you this wonderful property today because it is an architecturally designed, split-level cosmopolitan masterpiece of a home. It is quite literally perched on about an acre at the highest point on Sandalwood Close. As you can imagine, it is unashamedly about 180-degree views of mountains and rainforests and, of course, that fantastic lifestyle property. Let’s go in and have a look, but before we go in, don’t forget to subscribe if you want to see more fabulous properties like this one.

Angela: Don’t you just love those breezes with elevation, beautiful and cool in the wet tropics and in the summer. Before we head into the house and do a little bit of orientation, the sealed driveway, you will hopefully have noticed when we came through this fabulous pillared entrance to the property. It is 100% private. You feel like you’re just coming into your own resort-type oasis. Before we go in, exciting plus orientation. We have master wing just here. Then, we head up into what is just sensational open living kitchen, and of course phenomenal view.
Then over this side, we’ve got a little laundry nook and an outdoor hanging area with another little balcony. As if that’s not enough because that is where you’ll live, we have separate living downstairs. We’ve got three bedrooms. We’ve got another central bathroom. We’ve got a separate toilet just down here. Then at the ends of the house, we have two work sheds. Let’s go and have a look at that view.
[music]
Angela: Chunky wooden stairs, beautiful steel balustrading. [gasps] My goodness, the view. We’ve seen the view, we’ll look at it again. This was the master wing that we were talking about, but I’m going to meet you in here, in what is quite luxuriously described as the living area. We mentioned about having space downstairs, of course, but I can guarantee that if you were to come home at the end of the day to your Essastone kitchen, entertainer’s delight, you just would not want to go anywhere else.
Of course, with what’s happening all over the world at the moment with the virus and with Australia, this really is the ultimate sanctuary. If you did have to not go anywhere, you would be very happy to be staying at home. Beautiful kitchen, Bosch dishwasher. It really is, just as I said, it’s an entertainer’s delight. A fantastic oven here, plenty of space for the biggest of fridges because that’s always what people say, “Have I got space for my fridge?” Yes, you do.
Of course, stainless steel. We’ve got electric and gas Highland cooktop, and utility. Plenty, plenty, plenty, of utility. These are fabulous. Soft close drawers, and of course pantry space in here. Come back around here again because I do want us to just keep looking at that view. We know that if we’re sitting here having a tea or a brekky in the morning, that is absolutely going to feed the soul. I think that beautiful big tree there is probably a hickory tree. Lots of rainforest trees on the property. There’s a kauri pine and there’s silky oak and lots and lots of natives.
As you sit here, you are going to see birds and butterflies and, of course, wallabies, just beautiful. Living area, we talk about little luxury items. Wood burning slow combustion stove, just for those chilly Kuranda nights. Of course, plenty of space for these. These are really big lounges. Again, just ultimate and utter relaxation. Of, course with the low maintenance of the house, built in roughly 2007, it is steel post and beam construction. You’ve got block which is concrete, you’ve got insulated roof and they’re all steel panelings in the roof.
You really don’t have to worry about just maintenance. Paint and wood, all the things that go with that living in our beautiful part of the world. Fly-screened, let’s not forget the luxury of fly screens. Both of these doors open and close. If you don’t like little mozzies or little flying flies that come out in the evening just as the sun goes down, how good is that? Absolutely beautiful. I just want you to breathe, take it in, and then we’re just going to have a little look at the laundry. Then, we’re going to absolutely explore that master resort en suite.
[music]
Angela: We’re just going to head off and have a look at the laundry, but I just can’t help myself. Look at the vibrant colors of the artwork. Clearly, they don’t come with the property, but these have actually been painted by a local artist, David Stacey. You really ought to google him. He is a master and the most humble, gorgeous person. He lives here. He’s one of our neighbors. Draws all the natural seeds and birds and butterflies that we’re privileged to have in our rainforest environment.
Laundries, oh my goodness, come on in here. If ever you wanted a big laundry, let me just pop this little light on first so you can see it with the light. On. Okay, there we go. Again, ventilation, we have got louver windows with fly screens. I just love this. Here we go. This will stay, so you’ve got one of those drop-down iron and board cupboards. Of course, plenty of cupboard space that we’ll see when we go downstairs in the whole of the house. There’s just plenty of cupboard space. Great utility bench, and of course, nice big steep sink.
In the tropics, drying clothes is such a fabulous luxury. You don’t necessarily want to be hanging your stuff outside, you want it just under cover so you can hang things out for a day, for a week. You can air things and this is just the perfect setup. We’ve got some sun. The house actually faces, or the balcony faces pretty much north. We just have those beautiful warm breezes and, of course, another cupboard. We are going to head off before we go downstairs and check out that resort-like master en suite.
[music]
Apart from all the beautifulnesses, just a reminder that we just spoke about, lovely, lovely concrete and of course we got steel and we’ve got steel, but you’ll also notice natural light. Natural light bounces off every single window. We do have some drop-down wind-up screens pretty much everywhere you look so you can control light, rain, wind, breeze, but this is the exciting part. We’re heading into the master en suite and this is where we would go down to the lower living area, if you like, but this is amazing. Come on in. I’m just going to have to show you the bathroom. Come into the bathroom.
This, you’ve gotten up out your bed in the morning, looking at your view, which we will absolutely look at and you go, “Mm, mm, mm,” and then you come in here. Look, double shower. This, I can’t stretch this far. This is big and, of course, we get double heads, we’ve got fabulous little drain there. That just looks again very hotel-like and the decadence of a sunken bath. Imagine bubbles, champagne, tea, coffee, whatever you would love to do sitting in amongst your bubbles, and we are looking out to, again, the views of the mountains and the rainforest, and fly-screened. Great, big, beautiful vanity, you’ll find lots of organic wood pretty much everywhere you look, and amongst the modern, which is a beautiful combination.
Then just pop your little head in here, because this is a separate toilet. Whoops, and again, if I just open this door, we’ve got, again, natural light, but this is fabulous. Absolutely fabulous. We have the biggest of biggest beds with the biggest of biggest space either side of the bed, and if you just come around here, I really shouldn’t sit probably on people’s beds, but you just can’t help yourself. That is amazing. We’ve got some trees right in front of the balcony and you could keep them, you could trim them, you could do whatever you wanted to do, but it does not detract from the fact that you have your own little magnificent oasis.
I talked before about the natives and the native trees and the native bushes, and you will get little honeyeaters, little birds, and little butterflies just puddling around here, absolutely priceless. Then if you, again, just pop your little head around here, we’ll see that this is where we came up the driveway at the front of the house, and we can actually get to the underside where, again, we have got really big undercover patio area. What is not to love? Come and have a look at this here, we’ve got a little mirror here, but this is completely built in so you’ve got all your drawers again. You’ve got your stone tops, we’ve got our robes here that slidey, all very beautiful. What’s not to love? We’re going to head back out and we’re going to head downstairs.
[music]
Angela: Come on down. Before we actually go and have a little explore on the lower level, we’ll just very quickly look at one of those work sheds because it’s just right here. Beautiful rock wall, love the colors on the wall. It’s just organic and natural. This is where we come in. This is the double carport, and at the end of the carport, we’ve actually got a fabulous little storage work shed, whatever you want to use it for, but always handy at the end of where you park your car. That’s where we came up the driveway. Then around the side, we’ve got brilliant, again, undercover living area, and each of the rooms come out into the tiled area balcony and, of course, it’s set up at the moment.
Oh, let’s just have a quick look. We set up at the moment as a gym and, of course, you can see that we’ve got, again, all the natural light, and we still have fabulous, fabulous views, little steps down into the garden, and I’ll keep going on about this, but the native plants really just attract all the natural, beautiful wildlife. These are all natural plants, all natural plants all around there, it’s just gorgeous. We’re going to stick to our original plan, we’re going to head back to the bottom of the stairs, and we’re going to explore under the lower level. This is us back at the bottom of the stairs. The cold courtyards, Indonesian, tropical Bali type feel, it’s calming.
It is unbelievably calm on the senses and if you can hear, it is super duper peaceful. It’s super quiet and under this section, it is cool beyond belief. Outdoor area here, we have an extra little toilet, so just pop your head in here. Fabulous for if you’re outside or you’re in your little work shed, little workshop, and you just want to wash your hands or obviously use the toilet. Then in here, we have– now, it’s currently being used as an office, but it could be a bedroom, it could be an art studio, it really could just be whatever you want it to be. What I have to share is that wooden doors in the whole of this property are bespoke, so they’re all handmade doors.
Every door that we go through is a non-manufactured, if you like, beautiful bespoke wooden door. In here, again, you could put a little chair, little water feature. You could have little tinkles, you could have some nice meditation music. It’s glorious. Screen door. Come on in and, again, hardwood door. Just check this out. Whoops. The luxury little details that we were talking about before is simple things like there’s a recess behind the door so that when the door actually fits in, it’s not sticking out.
The people who currently own the property actually built the property, so it is a genuine one owner and it has just been lovingly looked after and maintained from 2007 when it was finished. We’ve got a corridor here. I have to show you this with these cupboards now. You’re going to find it hard to believe that that are wall-to-wall cupboards that are almost one-meter deep. I shouldn’t open people’s cupboards, but just have a quick look in here. We’ve got about a meter of storage and we have high ceilings, so that goes all the way along obviously the walls. We had all that storage upstairs and the laundry, all storage upstairs, and the little laundry balcony. Just amazing.
This real pretty, pretty room looks out onto where we had the little exercise bike and the treadmill, and it has these fabulous screens, Japanese-inspired, oriental screens, tough as not plastic, but really, really, really tough composite something rather, but natural light and look, they let all the light in there and they just slide beautifully. Clearly, somebody is a musician in the family and it just adds to the ambiance.
Another beautiful bathroom. The beautiful bathrooms are really the key thing with this property as well and, of course, we have very similar styling. We have got a beautiful, big open shower. There’s no glass, plenty of headroom. It’s just that feeling of freedom. Frosted glass here, just for that little bit of privacy. Again, fly screens, just love the fly screens. Tiled, so maintenance is just super duper, just low maintenance. Again, gorgeous bamboo doors.
This is a gorgeous, sensational room. Look at the natural light. There are no lights on in here, and the light is just flooding in. Each of the windows, we have real gorgeous, just natural, subdued, filtered lighting. We’ve got all these blinds that just come up and down. Maybe your work in shifts or something and you just want to be able to sleep during the day. This is the most amazing living, sleeping cool and calm part of the house. We’re just going to have a quick wander around the gardens and I’m going to do a wrap-up.
Let’s come out. Let’s be unorthodox and let’s come out the gardens through a bedroom. Again, I just wanted to show you these brilliant doors. They are everywhere and they clearly are luxury items. They’re just, again, no maintenance. This is where we were before we had a look-down into the natural– it’s a very natural garden. Again, low maintenance. Ooh, love the wooden posts.
You can imagine exercising out here in the morning, just [breathes deeply] getting your energy hit for the day. Paved stones, tinted glass. You’ll actually notice that a lot of the glass is tinted. It’s a bright day today and we didn’t have that glare inside the house. This is another fantastic work area. I think you might be quite shocked when you see the size of here. This, it could be a cellar, it could be literally a work room, it could be another living area. You have service areas here that you could even take that wall out and make this into a little granny flat or extra bathroom. Not that you need it, but it’s all doable.
Of course, we’ve got high ceilings, and you can see the actual construction quite easily, that it is all block. What are you going to use it for? Your decision. Now, we are on town water, but there’s a 22– I think it’s roughly 22,000-liter tank there that’s collected off the roof. If you want to water your gardens and you want to be quite frugal with your water, you can be. That’s just over there. Again, look at this, all these gorgeous little features, low maintenance. Absolutely just love them. We’re just going to head back around again and have a baby quick look through the garden before we do a wrap-up.
[music]
Angela: Just can’t stop looking at those fabulous artistic treasures. Let’s do a little bit of a wrap-up. Now, why would you buy this magnificent property? My goodness. Where do you start? There’s a list like 300-miles long, but the reality is that we are in one of the most beautiful parts of the world. We have space, we’re on almost one acre on an elevated part of Sandalwood Close, and the views, which we’ll again just finish off with, but you’ve seen them before, are just absolutely stunning. We’ve got mountains and we’ve got rainforest and it recharges the soul.
As if that’s not fantastic enough, we just have luxury living. We have space to breathe. We have got the most amazing kitchen, which we have seen, of course. But it’s about friends, it’s about family, or if you are on your own and you just want to have that gorgeous feeling of isolation, this is it. Built in 2007, so it’s not an old property. It’s been beautifully maintained and looked after. Of course, the breezes, north aspect, sun, we’ve got natural light. Of course, we’ve got our potbelly stove. I keep saying, “Of course, of course, of course,” like it’s a given, it’s not a given these properties are created with love. They’re created with passion and everywhere we look, that really does come across.
If you had to be in a place like this where you felt just absolutely rejuvenated, you can still jump in your car and just little three or four-minute drive into Kuranda Village where you can have your coffee, your breakfast. Food works, medical centers, post office are, of course, just down into Smithfield where you’ve got everything you would ever need. Bunnings, Woolies, Coles, it is just such a phenomenal location. Give me a call. Angela Martin, 0403 788 187. Visit the website, angelamartin.tv. I sincerely look forward to be able to share this video with you because we probably can’t meet in person. Just pick up the phone, call me. This could be your new sanctuary.
